Monte D’Oiro Winery Competition

In Spring 2020, we entered a competition to design a new wine tasting facility for the Quinto do Monte d’Oiro winery in Freixial de Cima, Portugal. The site sits at the edge of the vineyard between the fermentation tanks with stunning views to the southwest overlooking the valley. The design team decided to highlight the amazing view by nestling the tasting room into the hillside at the terminus of the winery tour. As cork is the primary local material in Portugal, and such a sustainable product, we chose to use it throughout the interior of the tasting room. Cork CMU walls and cork blocks make up the ceiling, while a CNC-cut agriboard wall and cork ceiling accent structure were designed to create a cave-like feel. The team also designed a unique table where up to 50 guests can sit with views out to the vineyard.
